4 THINGS TO DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM A WORKPLACE BULLY

Bullies are everywhere. Just as when we think that bullies outgrow themselves after school, you will be surprised to find them in areas that are outside of their usual “turf.” Unlike the classic example of the school bully, adult bullies are less overt in their schemes but are nonetheless as damaging as the kind who do not shy away from being evil. In most cases, they are found in the workplace.

Workplace bullying is more common than people assume. But as something negative as bullying is often not tolerated in many work culture, how the act occurs take on subtle forms, often only most visible to the targeted person. It’s toxic and demeaning, yet everyone can fall victim to this role.

4 THINGS TO DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM A WORKPLACE BULLY

Should you be this person, here are a few ways you could protect yourself from a toxic office co-worker:

1. Do not give the bully power over your well-being

Being a subject to a bully’s abuse can be traumatizing. While getting perturbed, offended, and mad are some of the obvious implications of being bullied, you should not give your “bossy” co-worker the power to subdue you.

Although getting back to the bully may be a tempting choice, in the workplace setting—especially if the toxic person holds a higher position in the company—it may just be counterproductive, especially if the attack is indeed insidious.

Instead, do not pay regard to the bully’s attacks on you and just focus on the positive. After all, being the victim of a bully is not about you, it is about them and their insecurities which are threatened by you.

2.Limit interaction with the bully

A bully often takes delight in overpowering their supposed victim. If you feel like you are being targeted by a ruffian in the office, try to distance yourself from the person as possible. The less you are in contact with a person who seemingly intends you no good, the better you are off with yourself.

3.Focus on the good in yourself

To be under attack by a bully can quickly shift your focus to what is wrong with yourself rather than what is wrong with the bully. This mentality is self-damaging as it destroys the positive view of yourself.

Instead at looking at your own faults, you had the best look at the opposite—see your worth and the positive things you do by what you’re doing. When you let a bully inside you, you are making in someone who intends to ruin you. Do not let it.

4.Tap on your social support

It is tough to be faced with a bully on your own. But it does not mean that you should be.

When your dealing with the bully gets tough, and you start to feel weak from the inside, always remember that there are people who do care for your well-being which you can get touch with. It could be friends or family.

Do not let the bully be central to your life, the person is not worth it. Instead, focus on those people that add value to your self-worth.
